[press association.] CHRISTOHORCK, Tuesday. An elderly man named Alexander, a baker, committed suicide by poispri to-day. About twenty applications for small farm sections,, on deferred payments, were made to-day at the Land, Board office. The Licensing Committee, in obedience tor a mandamus of this Supreme Court, sat today to hear an application for a renewal oF the license of the Royal Hotel, Woodend. After taking evidence for and against the application, the Court adjourned till Tuesday next. Mr. Rolleston. was. a passenger for Wellington by the Rotorua. The executive conimittee have resolved to recommend tenders to be called for tbo erection,of the exhibition buildings. Mora than half the available space has been applied for. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. A reporter of the evening paper was assaulted to-night. It is understood the affair? arose in connection with a paragraph recently inserted about a horse-whipping case. Law proceedings will probably eventuate. Constable Calbourne, who held the position of Clerk of the Court at Tapanui, was fined some time ago at Wellington for neglecting to furnish his monthly returns. He went into, gaol the day before yesterday to serve out the alternative of one month. The case brought against Mr. Dunston, of Kaikorai, a suburb," under the Publics Health Act, for allowing a nuisance in ctra- ■ section with .his soap-boiling, and bonecrushing works, .having been 1 dismissed, frealx . proceedings were instituted against hiiu by indictment. It was heard to-day, and tha defence being reserved, he was committed. ; for trial.
