Manaponri will leave for Sydney, via Russell, to-morrow at 4 p.m. The new schooner Makea Ariki cleared outwards upon her maiden voyage to Rarotonga yesterday. ' She will sail to-day. The ships Grasmere and Zealandia are both -discharging their home cargoes in excellent order, and with quick despatch. .The barque Alice Muir having discharged the combustible portion of her cargo, was towed up from the powder ground by the p.s. Tongariri yesterday, and at once berthed at the Railway Wharf. The schooner Kate McGregor, Captain EL C. Haywood, entered outwards at the Customs yesterday for Suva, via Mercury Bay. The R.M. s.b. Australii resumed her trip to Sydney at about 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Iter departure being wituessed by a large number of persons on the wharf. The s.s. Kotuku rails this evening for Te Aroha, Waitos, and Upper Thames. The steamship Doric came up harbour yesterday afternoon, and was safely berthed at the Quoen-stroefc Wharf. Shi) in the meantime had been passed by Dr. Philson, the Health Officer. The end ef th/a Queen-street Wharf was literally packed with an eager crowd ali anxious to obtain a close inspection of the large steamship. .Immediately the vessel was securely moored to the wharf, the gangways were put oat and hor passengers at once landed. Captain Nearing, -the stevedore, and his men were not slow in getting on board, and very soon everything was inTeadiness to commence the business of discharging, which it is ezpected will be completed by Friday next. The Kawatiri was hauled alongside on the outer side, and she will commence the work of supplying the Doric ■with coal, to-day. Acting under distinct instructions, no one was allowed on board the -vessel, except those holding orders from the company. The result of this stringent but very necessary rule was the causing of great disappointment to a large number of persons ■who had gone down to the vessel, in the hope •t)f being able to gratify their curiosity by an inspection of the ship. The work of discharging the Auckland portion of her cargo (some 1800 tons) will be commenced this morning. Considering the exceptional circumstances of the occasion, we think the authorities might fcavo kept the wharf in the immediate vicinity of the Doric's berth clear of cargo, so that, had she been ready, she might have at once -started discharging. Had shedesired to do so, the wharf was so blooked with goods landed from the mail steamer, that she would havo been unable. It is to be hoped tho authorities will remedy this mistake to-day. The Union Company's s.s. Taiaroa left Oamaru at 8.30 p.m. on the 10th, passed Akaroa Heads at 8 a.m. on the 11th, arrived at Wellington at 6.30 a.m. on the 12tb, left again at 4 p.m. • same date, arrived at Napier at 3 p.m.* on the 13th ; were unable to discharge cargo until following morning, on account of heavy sea, and left at 4.30 p.m. on the 14th ; arrived at Gisborne at 5.30 a.m. on tho 15th, left again at 4.30 p.m. en the same date; arrived at Tauranga&t 1 p.m. on the 16th, left ngainat 6 p.m. same date, and made fast alongside the whsrf at 7 a.m. yesterday.
