Mr. T. C. Guthrie, of the Village Line of vessels of Glasgow, who recently visited the various ports in New Zealand, has written a letter, dated Melbourne, March 22, to the Shipping and Mercantile Gazette npoH the subject of New Zealand ports. Speaking of this port, he says:—" Auckland is undoubtedly the harbour of New Zealand, but, unfortunately, the Board; in the past, have not been alive to their great and increasing trade, and wharves, sheds, etc., which should have been proceeded with years ago, are only now contemplated. The delays, therefore, in the diaoharge of general cargo ships have been at times very great, but I have pleasure in Btating that at my interview with tbe Harbour Board they decided to erect sheds forthwith, and gave me the assurance that increased wharfage, etc., would be provided, so that owners would have no further reason to'complain. I impressed upon the Trust the propriety of acting also as wharfingers, same as at Wellington, and probably this will be agreed to, or the whole leased to one party, under their control. may mention the stevedore's charge for discharging is Is 3d per ton againsb 10d per--.ton at Wellington—no doubt partly accounted for by the fact that work is frequently stopped shortly after noon throughthe wharf getting blocked. With the promised increase:} wharfage this charge may therefore be expected to be duced." ■•-'.■
