[Before F. Magmrc, Esq., J.P;] • r > Drunkenness.—Two personsfwere,'punished for this olfenee. : Vagrancv.—Charles Spalding was charged under the Vagrant Act with, having no law-"
ful visible means of support. The defendant was evidently suffering from excessive drinking, and was remanded for seven days for medical examination. Wife Beating. —Prank Smith was charged With assaulting his wife, Beatrice Mary Smith, by kicking her and attempting to choke her. The case was withdrawn. :.The Jewellery Eodbsisy.—Chas. Brown and John Grappel. on remand, were charged with breaking, entering, and stealing from a shop a quantity of jewellery and £13 in money, of a total value of £1496, the property of Laurcntz Henricfeson, on the 12th instant. . Mr. Tyler for the prisoner Grappel, arid ;Mr.' Lusk for Brown. Mr. Tyler said the case had been before the Court and : remands granted" :on the application of ; the police,'and he;now asked for a remand ;as certain facta had come to his knowledge yesterday and this morning, which he would have to inquire;: into.—Sergeant White op- ' posed the granting- of the remand. The ilearned gentleman bad complete opportunity of preparing the defence during the last fortnight.—Mr. Tyler said the opposition was [ unseemly, when he only asked for 24 hours' adjournment to enable them to prepare their ..defence. —Mr. Lusk made a similar application on the same grounds.—Sergeant White said he could not withdraw his opposition, as he was -informed by one of .the witnesses that attempts had been made to intimidate vhinrand tamper with him by threatening him with a prosecution for perjury.—The Court granted .- the;, adjournment, not considering that.the ends of justice would be interfered . with 1 in any -way.
