THE PROGRESS OF AUCKLAND.

The colonisation and settlement of large blocks of land acquired from the native owners is likely to be very largely promoted during the next few years, and already there are sure signs that the policy will be a successful one, and have a marked eflect upon the progress of Auckland. The Patetere Company, after having struggled through many unforeseen difficulties, has at length been successfully floated, and the original owners have retained interests sufficiently large to induce them to push on colonisation ' with energy and vigour. The Waikato Laud Association have also commenced to break up their large estates, and the first sale, held by Messrs. B. Tonks and Co., on Wednesday; is only preliminary to an extensive settlement in the locality of Tawhare and other adjacent districts. We hear al3t» of another large colonisation scheme for another district, which is on the tapis, and which, if successfully accomplished, will involve a capital of £250,000, and be the I means of introducing many useful settlers I into this provincial district. So convinced lof the future prosperity, and the rapid I expansion of 'the city of Auckland, is the Agricultural Association (formerly Maclean and Co.) that it has purchased the whole of the Surrey Hilla Estate, belonging to the Hon. J. Williamson, comprising about 311 acrss, for a sum which is stated to rea-h. £100,000. In the way of new enterprises we hear also of a Pure Bred Stock Company, which is to take over all the prize cattle and sheep of Messrs. Maclean and Co. and Messrs. Motrin, and which is to have for its. object the importation and breeding of the finest cattle and sheep that can be procured. With all these aids to settlement, and the opportunities for placing bona Jirfe settlers in the unpeopled districts, there ought to be a great and prosperous future before the place. Indeed, the exchange of property at steadily advancing rates in the city itself is daily chronicled, and on Z>ec. S the corner section of Queen and Customhouse-streets, of the Harbour Board .leases, which was recently purchased by Mr. J. Buchanan at the sale of the Coffee Palace Company, was resold at an advance of £1003.
