The "Wellington left again last evening for the same port, under the charge of Captain Farquhar, we are glad to notice is sufficiently recovered from his recent long illness to assume command. The barque Coromandel. for Napier, will take her departure to-day. Of her original carso fron London, she has on board for Napier 550 casks cement, and 536 packages general merchandise. The Coromandel will load at Napier •with wool for London. Wo arc sorry to learn that Captain Amodeo is at the present time suffering from a severe cold, and so much so that he has been ordered "by his medical advisers to remain on shore for a, time. It is to be hoped Captaiu Amodeo will soon be able to resume his command, for his genial face will be greatly missed by all those who are in the habit of travelling ■under hi« caro. Captain Amodeo has now been laid up for the last fortnight or thrco week*. The s.s. from Whangarei, arrivbd in harbour eaily this morning with a number of passengers andalarge cargo of settler's produce. She will leave again this eveniug at 5 o'clock. Mr. C. V. Haughton, who for some years past "has occupied the post of shipping clerk to tho Now Zealand Shipping Company in this city, •was a pHsaeueer to Dunedin by tho s.». Manupouri yesterday. Mr. Haughton is, wo understand, to b" tixed at that port in a similar capacity to the one he has just left. The i>hip Margaiet GalbtaiOi has boon removed from her berth on the inner hide of the outer mai* tee. totho outer bide of the tee known aa the Northern S.S. Company** tee. Tbo b.h. Kotorua, from Southern ports, may lie looked for this evening about 8 o'clock. Tho k.s. .Southern Cross left KuNsell for this port at 2 »».m. yesterday. She may thcroforo bo be expected early this morning. C'.KOO Caiihvino Space. - Tho great eVirgp that ha"* takou place during the la*t few ye\\s in tlio patsengor trade (and which wili l.c constantly taking place in tbo future) between tl»i> colouy and Kngland and America, owing to (hi* ever increasing competition of ste.nn vt«.prls. is resulting in empty saloon and dock-house e.ibinn of almost all veaseU whether outward < r itiw ud bound. Tocomponsato for tho loss of passergera* money attempts have been made (and will be more generally adopted in the future) to utilise this otherwise vacant space by tilling un with wool, gum, etc., a plan which wo should think would expose them to greater ri «k of average claims than if stored in tho usual manner lielow hatches. Wo think it is tho duty of the underwriters' associations to determine that wool, or other goods, shipped anywhere except ia the proper cargo carrying space should not bo taken or considered an ordinary zisk for insurance.
