TUAKAU.

Arrr.p. a very wet -winter and late spring, summer has set in warm and dry, causirg farmers some uneasiness for tlieir potato crops which at present are looking well, hut unless rain coon the yield will be unsatisfactory. The wheat, nearly all spring sown, has a healthy appearance, and promises to be a fair average crop. Oats, generally, are not so good ; a soaking rain would help them much. Some patches of mangold wurzel, notwithstanding the dry weather, have a healthy appearance. >'ost of the farms in this district are small, few ranging over 150 acres, while many are under'' 00. and yet on these small holdings a great variety of crops are grown. The chief'productions are bntter, wheat, and potatoes. Flax-mills, now numbering eight, employing a good many hands, are the main stay of Tuakau. Mr. Oldham's mat manufa-tury is also a most important industry, and doubtless a very successful one for the enterprising owner. The district, on the whole, is making very good progress. Pome neat dwelling houses have been lately erected, and fruit and ornamental trees planted, adding much to the appearance of this naturally picturesque locality. Our young men and boys are groatlv interested in the no! le game of cricket, an 1 there are now two teams ready to do battle with worthy foes.

Mr. Brnford. who succeeded Mr. O'Ponoghue at the District School, in May last, leaves ns at Christmas, and Mr. Cronin, from the YVellesley-street School, takes his place. Mrs. Renell. from Papakura, has been appointed to Harrisville School, rice Miss Elink, resigned.

A few isolated cases of measles appeared during the winter, causing some unra:; : nePs, but during the spring the disease burst out all over the district, hardly a familv escaping.—[Own Correspondent, "December 6.]
