COUNTRY NEWS.

WAIUKU. On Monday evening last, a public meeting in connection with the Band of Hope Society took place in the Temperance Hall. There was a large gathering, all the seats being well filled. The Rev. Mr. Thompson occupied the chair. The meeting was addressed by the chairman and Messrs. Goldsbury, W. H. Barriball, and A. Old field. Recitations were given by Mr. Finlay and Masters C. West, C. Bennett, W. McGowan, W. Ridgly, and E. Deed, and readings by Messrs. S. Hodge and J. J. Reed. The Temperance Choir sang several suitable pieces during the evening. A goodly number of persons added their names to the pledge book, and a successful meeting was closed by the singing of " God Save the Queen." The third carbine contest—Ta Awamutu v. Waiuku—Kill take place at Maraerohia, near Waiuku, on Wednesday, the 6th inst., commencing at nine a.m. It is believed that the teams will be 15 men a-side, and an ex; citing contest may be anticipated. On Tuesday, the 12th inst., the Government district prizes will be competed for at the Waiuku range, commencing at half-past nine o'clock sharp. The weather still continues very dry, and feed is drying up very fast. The hay crops are very light, and oaten hay, if rain does not shortly come, will not be worth cutting. —[Own Correspondent, December 2.]
