Tux Mail Steamer.—Thero was no sign of the in.al steamer Australia, from Sydney, up to the hour of our going to press. Tiij Union S.S. Co.'s s.s. Manapouri, from Southern ports, is due hero this morning. She •will leave again for Russell this evening. The cutter Dcveron, from Whangarei, arrived yesterday, with 40 tons coal. The Union S.S. Co.'a s.s. Omapere took her departure for Westport, via Kussell, yesterday evening. The brigantine Defiance, hence, arrived aiongside the wharf at Helensville yesterday morning. The brig Vision, from this port, arrived at Te Jvopuru on Sunday last. The following steamers of the Northern S.S. Co. took their departure yesterday evening : — "Wellington, for Tauranga; Glenelg, for Kussell and other Northern ports; Douglas, for Blercury Bay. They all had good fair cargoes and lull passenger lists. Thu cutter Start, for Whangaroa, cleared Outwards yesterday. The tchooner Ocean will Bail for Russell with the !ir.,t. fair wind. The brigantine Ada C. Owen left Timaru via O.imaru for this port on the Ist instant, with a cargo of 400 Backs oata, 140 Backs wheat, from t:..i toi'iuer port. There was quite a large fleet of small craft Ijiug wind bound, yesterday, in harbour. Last evening the wind backed round to the westward, and there was a general clearing out of vessels. The tchooner Three Cheers entered outwards at the Customs, yesterday, for Suva. She is loading with timber at "Whangarei. The ship UermioHe, for L indon, took advantage of the change of wind, and proceeded on her voyage for London shortly before daybreak this morning. It is to be hoped that Captain Roberts -will have a quick and pleasant run Home to •compensate for the tedious delay he has exptiiunced in this harbour. Such delay, howtjver, cannot altogether bo attributed to the scarcity of seamen as to the evident unwillingness shown on the part of seamen to ship in this particular vessel. Thk E'Fcsibala. —A new cutter named the E'Fucibala was recently launched from thu shipbuilding yards of Messrs. Lane and Brown, "Wlir.ugaroH, to the order of a Tongan chief. Thu cutter, which is about 14 or 15 tons measurement, is now ready for sea, having on beard a cargo of 10,000 feet timber. Captain George Fiost left last evening by the s.n. G'.eneig to take command for the passage down t Tuiigatabu. The cutter will in all probability Bail on Friday next. Captain Frost will return to Auckland if possible by the brigantine Myttle, and then engage in the labour trade with a vessel already chartered for the purpose. Captain J. McKenzie, the Harbour Master, was engaged yesterday in taking soundings of the depth of water at the new inner western tee. Captain McKenzie has no data to guide himself as to depths of water aloDgsido these toes, and therefore liaß to take soundings to satisfy himself before he can venture to berth vessels at the different tees. The brigantine Ryno wa» taken out of dock yesterday, ahe having been taken in by Messrs. Sims and Brown to receive new copper. Many of our readers will learn with much satisfaction that an old friend—Captain John

Mackay, at present commanding the steamer Thistle, but who was formerly in command of I the Meg Menilies, and later in the s.s. Southern Cross—has had 1113 exertions in pioneering in the colony of Queensland recognised by the grant of 1000 acres of land. In the Queensland Assembly on the 2Gth ult., amotion w*b carried in favour of a gratuity of 1000 acres of land to John Mackay, in consideration of hia discovery of the Pioneer Iliver, and named after him. In addition, we liavo seen some correspondence wherein the Colonial Treasurer of Queensland intimates that the poaitifJH of harbourmaster of Cooktown -is open to Captain Mackay if he will accept it, the remuneration, including a free house, being satisfactory. Captain Mackay'a old friends will join us m congratnlating nim on the acce-ssion to his wealth iu land, us well as to the recognition of his •forth as a citizen and experience ua a mariuer in tho colony in which he is eo well known.
