Clerk of the Scales: Mr. V. W. Marks. ] Clerk of the Course: Mr. T. A. Brown. Secretary : Mr. Wμ. Percival. The new departure inaugurated by the Auckland Kacmg Club on November 7 was in most points successful. It. brought together a fine class of horses, especially in the juvenile list, and there could be no exception taken to the races ; but there was a poverty of public patronage, which can only be accounted for by the fact that there was bo holiday or half-holiday to enable townspeople to visit the racecjurse, and the country settlers were making the best of the propitious rains which have been falling recently. The improvements recently effected ■were sources of favourable comment. Mr. Impey's band played selections during the afternoon. The police, under the command of Senior-Sergeant White, displayed a moral force, but physical effort was not required except on the part of Trooper Kelly, who assisted the clerk of the course. The whole meeting passed off in a most satisfactory manner. The following are the details of the races i— Tkial Stakes of lOOsovs., with a sweepstakes of Ssovs. each, amount accruing from sweepstakes to go to second horse. The betting was 6 to 4 on the field, 6 to 4 against Billingsgate, 2 to 1 against Merlin, 5 to 2 against Kalo, 3 to 1 against Fishgirl, and 5 to 1 the others. Kalo came up with a good stride, collared and passed the others in succession, and fairly cantered home, witming w'thout an effort from the distance-post. There were three horses posted, Marquis . being a starter, to the extent that his jockey t was weighed out, the horse saddled and on 1 the course, but the owners, R. and R. Duder, eventually withdrew him. Tho race 1 was a hollow one. Chanticleer took the lead > at first, but Merlin, the favourite, won hard held by a length. Time, lmin. 27|secs. The

The betting, as the horses went on the course, was even against Yuba Bill, 2 to 1 against Dewdrop, 4 to 1 Lone Hind, sto 1 Nigger, 6 to 1 Lara, and 7 to 1 Katipo. Old Lara, although, in bandages, came on the course very fit, and gained lavour considerably. Dewdrop looked sleek, well, and fit, and Lone Hand had some friends, including his owner, who had strong hopes of carrying off the handicap. There was some little difficulty at the start, but finally they were sent from the back of the course on pretty ewn terms. To most on-lookers from the stand, the race seemed to have resulted in a dead heat, but the judge decided in favour of Dewdrop by a head. The favourite only made a moderate third. Time, 2mins. This was not only the best race of the clay, but one of the best steeplechases that has ever taken place in the province. It was gamely contested by good horses with good jockeys up, and the excitement was very great from start to finish.
