WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.

[FROM OCR CORRESI'OXDESTS.] Hamilton, Friday. The Waikato County Council has been asked by the Cambridge Highway District Board to borrow a sum of £1000, under the Road Construction Act, for the main road between Cambridge and Hsjiiilton. This loan will be on the terms of £'250 contributed by the county to £750 contributed by the Government, the Cambridge District Board pledging itself to contribute the annual £25 necessary for tke repayment of the same over a term of years. The Rev. Fulton, Presbyterian minister, leaves Hamilton next week for New Plymouth, and will be replaced by the Rev. Mr. Fergusson, from Wellington. Bishop Cowie has proposed, as he will be engaged in inducting the Kev. Mr. Walpole to St. Mary's, on the 7th instant, to come to Hamilton, and induct the Rev. O'Callaghan Biggs to St. Peter's, on the Sth instant, and proceed next (lay to Hautaru, to lay the foundation stone of the new church there. Hamiltok, Saturday. A somewhat ludicrous accident, but fortunately attended with no very serious resnlts, occurred to a party returning in a trap from hi Piako races on Thursday evening. Mr. Camp, Frank Ewen, and a Maori named Tua, were in the vehicle, one of the wheels of which, getting over the narrow roadway on the swamp road near Tawhare, caused it to overturn. Mr. Ewen seeing the coming trouble, jumped out of the trap, but into the swamp, and literally up to his ears; the Maori was pitched head first into the swamp, but Mr. Camp was more fortunate. Luckily some of the Waikato Land Company's men were close at hand, and running up, assisted the two unfortunates out of their dilemma, and saved the farce from becoming a tragedy. A special meeting of the Hamilton West Committee was held yesterday, when all members were present, to consider charges made against the head teacher, Mr. J. M. Murray, the one of cruelly beating a son of Mr. Davis ; the other of systematic slight and insult in the presence of the school towards the assistant teacher, Mr. Meagher, who has charge of the higher classes in the school. Mr. Meagher's complaint, which was in writing, was ordered to be forwarded to the Board of .Education. The case of abusing the lad Davis was deferred for iurther consideration until an explanation had been received from Mr. Murray. One member of the committee stated that he had seen the boy's injuries, and they were unmistakable. Previous complaints have been made by parents of excessive punishment inflicted on their children at the West Hamilton School. The conduct of the head teacher is described by Mr. Meagher in his written complaint, forwarded to the Education Board, as often " bordering upon frenzy." A communication was read from the Education Board promising to remove the assistant master after Christmas, and the use of the school was granted to hold the district scholarships examination in on the 19th instant and two succeeding days, the holidays commencing on the preceding Friday. Cambridge, Friday. A mistake occurred in the numbers forwarded last night of the polling at Broad Meadows to decide whether a special rate should be levied to enable the Cambridge Highway Board to borrow £1000 for road works under the Road Construction Act. The numbers were : For the loan, 42 votes, by 16 ratepayers representing property of the yearly value of £3993 ; and against the rate, 6 votes, by 2 ratepayers, representing property of the yearly value of £505 10s 6d. At a meeting of the Board held the same evening it was resolved in addition to the roads set down in the schedule to be made under loan, to drain and form about 17 chains on the road known as Watts-road, Mr. Forrest undertaking to prepare plans and specifications, tenders for which will be received on the 13th December ; and it was further resolved that the monthly meeting of the Board should be held on the 14th instead of the third "Wednesday in the month. On Tuesday the Auckland Agricultural Company let a contract for snagging the Waitoa River to Mr. William Lovett at 12s per chain ; also a contract to Mr. J. Coates, for deepening drains to the extent of £2SOO, being a portion of No. 12 contract recently advertised. The ploughing contract was let to Messrs. Watt anil Howie. With respect to the adjustment of the county boundaries within the Taotaoroa highway district, the Cambridge highway district object to have the portion of the first-mentioned district tacked on to them and retained in the Waikato County, but recommend that the Tamahere highway district should keep its present, boundary, and that the Piako County be enlarged, so a3 to include that portion of the Taotaoroa district at present contained in the Waikato County. The Cambridge or B Cavalry Volunteer Troop has decided at a meeting of the members to fire for troop and district prizes, and will then probably disband. In consecjuenco of a less number than 25 men having turned out to drill they were informed by Colonel Lyon, at the inspection parade, that they were no longer a troop, and therefore not eligible to receive capitation allowance. The same rule applies to the Hamilton or C troop at their late drill. The secretary of the Cambridge District Board has been instructed to write to the Government for the £1000 promised for approaches to the Tamahere railway station on the Crawford's Gully-road. Cambridge, Saturday. The local Board has agreed to execute :i much needed work in forming the road from the town belt to Fencourt Lodge, a distance' of about a mile ; and also in voting a sum ol £S to be expended under the control of Mr. Allwill in repairing another road in the same locality. Men, too. will be placed on the Victoria-road for a few weeks to put it into a fit state of repair. Te Ra, the native who so brutally illtreated his wife, has been simply reprimanded by the Court, and mulcted in £116s 6d. It is time that a stop was pnt to this sort of thing. When in their own settlements the natives are kind and humane both to their wives and children, but when they come into our settlements, on such invasions as the holding of Native Land Cour 5 .under the excitement of drink, occurrenci ssuch as that just brought before the Court, are far too common. Alexandra, Saturday. The tea and soiree in aid of the Wesleyan Church funds held in the Public Hall on Thursday night was a great success. The Rev. T. J. Wells presided. The attendance was large, and a novelty was introduced by the singing of Sankey and Moody's hymns by the audience.
