March it appeared that a man named illiam Erickseu, a native of Finland, arrived at Port Chalmers on November 13, in the ship Taranaki, from London. He was then ill, suffering, it afterwards appeared, from typhoid fever. No medical officer visited the ship, and there waa no doctor on board. Tiie ship was cleared in, all being reported well to the Customs officials. Erickseu came t3 Christchurch on November 17, consulted a medical man, who prescribed for him, and stayed at one of the hotch; in Christchurch till November 20, when he proceeded to Pigeon Bay and saw Dr. Guthrie on November 21. He pronounced the illness to be typhoid fever that had been in progress for at least ten days, and ordered Ericksen's admission to the hospital. The secretary brought the case before the Board to ;!iow the necessity for a medical officer to inspect all passenger ships on arrival, aud on the motion of the Hon. E. C. J. Stevens the matter was referred to the Government.
