CHURCH OF ENGLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL ATHLETIC SPORTS.

The annual athletic sports of the boys belonging to the Church of England Grammar School, came off yesterday, on the Domain cricket ground, where a large and gay assembly was present to witness the games. Amongst other visitors we observed the Bishop of Auckland and Mrs. Cowie, the Warden of St. Johns College and Mrs. Gulliver, the masters of the Auckland College and Grammar School, and several old boys of the school. The weather was charming, although the wind was a trifle strong, and interfered somewhat with the throws and times. As the afternoon advanced the crowd of spectators increased, and the brightness of the ladies' dresses added to the brilliancy of the scene. The greatest interest was manifested in the different events, and anything like an excellent feat, such for instance as White's high jump of 5 feet 3 inches, or Taylor's 100 yards in 11 seconds, was greeted with loud applause, whilst the difficulties of the Siamese, and the tumbles in the sack races caused great merriment. The Bishop acted as president, and the officers. who wore the school colours, were as follows: Starter, Mr. A. de Lisle Hammond : judges, Messrs. H. T. Pycroft and A. F. T. Ar.sley ; time-keeper and judue of bowling, Mr. \V. H. W. Xi-jholls, of the Auckland College and Grammar School, who kindly gave his assistance ; stewards. Messrs. J. H. P. Kissling. F. J. Stevens, J. Tavlor, F. White, and N. T. Williams. At "the conclusion of the sports the prizes were presented to the succes-ful competitors at the steps of the pavilion by Mrs. Cowie, after which the boy 3 gave cheers for that lady and fcr the masters of the school.
