THE GOLDFIELDS.

[FROM on: OWN C-iNIUtE.Si'ONIIENT. 1 Thame.-*, Wednesday. Old Cai.'.iiusiav.—Sinking operations in the win/.e below Xo. 2 level on the specimen leader is .steadily progressing, upwards of 2s feet having been sunk. The lead coutinues to maintain its size, but during the past ten daps no gold has been visible, thuiigh the minerals are still ol a favourable uature. A quantity of crushing dirt still corned to baud from the .-top .-s on the same leader above No. 2 level, and s imo small .-triggers produce a fair amount of nice golden stone. Stoping is being proceeded with on No. 1 reel, above the drive from N'o. 2 shaft. The reef here cuius a goo.l class of minerals, and shows occasional dabs of gold. The manageris now clearing out the No. 1 drive towards the i 'tago section, in order to put up a third rise to the drive from No. 2 shaft. When this third rise is up, a large block of ground will be ready for stoping, and judging from the prospects that have already been obtained, should be a very payable one, with the exception of the er.ss-cut towards the Red Queen shaft. These are the only works in hand at present. C:caning-up -u ill take place to-morrow or next day. Upwards of lift)- loads have been treated, about half of winch came from the stopos and winze on the specimen leader. No. 2 level. The remaining portion coming from the stopts on No. 1 reef, above No. 1 level. Prince Wi'Kiual.—The drive at the No. 4 level has now been extended to within about fifteen feet of the .Southern Cross boundary. About four feet back from the face a small break was met with, which hove the leader to the left, the full width of tiro drive. The whole of the lead from this break to the face has not been broken down yet. A few pounds of pieU< d stone were obtained from around the break, and duriHg my visit this mornim.' a little s»old was visible in the vicinity. The small stope to allow of stull pieces being put in, has been advanced to within about 30 feet of the face, and the leading stope has been carried forward over .'lO feet from the main break. A second stope has been advanced about 12 feet from the break. Altogether upwards of 2 cwt. of specimens and picked stone have come to hand in small parcels from the stopes and drives, since the last haul was teh-graphed. Cold is visible along the stopes, though not irr large ((Uantities." The reef in the face of the drive is somewhat larger than it lias been for the last ."10 feet, and the -round seaward of the .second break is not so "tight as that met with ju-tb.-f.ii-e it was conn; upon. It is intended shortly to start a cross-cir, north from the N'o. -1 level, at a point a little west of the main break, irr order to intersect the .Mariner's reef. Men are still at work jir--ji.ii ing the chamber at No. 1 level, preparatory to sinking the shaft a further lift of ill) feet. ' The drive and stopes east of the shaft .-till continue to produce a large output of quartz, in which a little gold is lri'ijuently neen. The air has been somewhat light ill this section of the mine of late, and in order to dispel this the manager is building a furnace underneath the air shaft at No. I level, which will cause a good up cast, thus bringing an equally good down cast through the main shaft, and through the various workings. [iIY TKI.KGRA I'll.—OWN (roURF.SI'ON DENT.] Thames. Wednesday evening. Xm.\Kic.mai<ki.t.-— Sales ; Deep Level] 3s (Id : Prince Imperial, J .->■>. Sellers : .Deep Level, 3s (id : Prince imperial, los : Southern Cross, 23s (id. Buyers : Deep bevel, .'is Id; Prince Imperial, 13s ; Queen of Beauty, 20s ' (id. A large number of Deep Levels passed hands at .'is (Jd ; also a fair amount of Prince [ Imperials at -13s. With the exception of ' shares in these two mines the market has been very quiet to-day. ( Sicoi-.s-.—This mine manager reports > under date '27th instant as follows :—Since 1 my last report I have made a start to rise in * the utope to bring another stope alon-' to ' where the last gold was got. At this "end t the walls have been irregular, but are im- < proving as stoped. In the rise the reef 1 looks well, and the ground is good working, f and there are good indications of muiidTe t coming in, which shows there is liomething not far oil". Where the Colonial is driving r on the reef at the corner jv-g they have come ' across another reef, which runs into your 1mine in the ground lately taken in. The r, reef is of a rubbly nature, and some, fair u prospects of gold. This reef has a very pro- ii inising appearance, and likely-looking to be c better lower down. [The gold is the whole ength of the stope, and in about ten feet, ivherc the best was got; but as the walls are r mproving, lam looking forward to have gold £ Jiuch longer in the present stope.] \,
