THE GOLDFIELDS.

Success— The reports from the manager of this mine eontinue very favourable, and a further find of specimens was telegraphed to Mr. J. Kirkwood on Saturday. The following is a copy of the telegram which was posted in the Exchange: " Banked 401bs. to-day.—Peter Reid." Mr. J. R. Randerson received a notification from the Bank of New Zealand relating to the yield of 781bs. specimens, on Saturday, which is as follows : ••From the TSlbs. of specimens forwarded here from your manager at Ooromandel, we have obtained 2170z5. of gold."

[FROM orrs OWh" CORRfcSPONDKTT.]

Thames, Saturday. The recent rich finds in the Prince Imperial mine have given a further impetus to the surrounding claims on the fiat, which were taken up at the time of the Queen of Beauty find. It has also had the effect of inducing the directors of the Deep Level Tribute Company to instruct their manager to commence operations in the face of tho south drive of the 640-feet level at once. Some time will elapse before driving is commenced, as it will be necessary to clean out and lay down rails for the greater portion of the drive The face of the south drive is up to about underneath the Queen of Beauty battery, or t within a distance of some 550 feet of the Prince Imperial shaft. Vn fortunately for the Deep Level Company they do not own I the ground underneath 400 feet from the surface of the Prince Imperial, London, Mariner, or Queen of England ; but underneath the 400 feet level of the Southern Cross ground they own an extensive block of ground. It is therefore intended to continue the drive seaward in a diagonal course, so as to get the Mariner's reef and No. 2 reef of the Prince Imperial as close to the latter'? boundary possible. Whether they have the Mariners' reef in the present face of the south drive or not will have to be proved by further driving. Considerable impatience is manifest here at the delay in obtaining the necessary winding machinery for the old Crown Princess shaft, for until this is iii position and the necessary appliances erected, the Queen of England, Mariner, and London claims are at a standstill, which is greatly to 1 e regretted, as there can be no doubt that when the three mines in question are opened up good results will follow.

Pkisck Imperial.—The stnpcs above the hillside drive have at last holed through to

the winze, and a splendid current of air n.ow traverses the slopes and level. Driving will shortly bt continued hillwards on the reef. | No further breaking down of the reef seaward of the break has taken place. The picked atone and specimens on hand will be crushed ou Monday, and elcaning up and retorting will take place on Tuesday. Bright Smile. In driving an intermediate level about 30 feet above the old Multum in Parvo level a haul of 65 pounds of kood specimens came to hand yesterday, and in breaking down again to-day a like amount was obtaiucd. This drive is being put in eastward from the present block of stopes, and contains about GO feet of backs. This drive is being extended towards the junction of a foot-wall lead, worked some time ago, with rich results, at the Bank of New Zealand level. It is anticipated that about 60 feet will have to be driven before coming up to this junction. Rkdbks Parr.—The manager is still driving ahead on the cross reef, in order to intersect other leaders, which are known to be somewhere in this locality. tJOLD RETURNS FOR THE WERK.
