THE FIRES AT AKAROA.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —MESS ASSOCIATION'.]
Curktciiurch, Tuesday. The alarm created iu Akaroa by the tires yesterday ; has been intensified by another fire this morning. Shortly before 2 o'clock the Somerset Hotel and out buildings, situated at the head of the bay, were burnt to the ground. In this instance the incendiary had to deal with an empty structure. No one, so far as is at present known, had recently been living or sleeping on the premises, owing to the fact that the lessee neglected to obtain a renewal of his license. It is naturally Bupposed that this new act of incendiarism is the work of one and the same person who fired the hotels yesterday. The buildings were insured in the London, Liverpool, and Globe. Insurances on Mackerlie's hotel, destroyed yesterday, as follows : —Building, £400; furniture, £200; in the Liverpool, London, and Globe. Offices. Mr. Bay ley, proprietor, estimates his loss at £1000 over and above the insurances. • Later.—The insurances on the Somerset Hotel were Norwich Union, £1000; Liverpool and London, £500. Nothing further is aa yet known. The excitement and alarm are greater than ever.
