Trickett was outpaced throughout, and passed the winning post thoroughly exhausted. Hanlan's time was 2Smins. Bsecs. The water was rough, and both men were compelled to bail. The Pope has recovered from his indisposition. Selby repudiates the cricketing scandal, and an inquiry is still going on. The disturbances at Syke, re ejectment for non-payaient of rent, have subsided. The Pope has decided to send Archbishop Croke on a special mission to Australia. He starts early. Socialism is spreading in the United States. Lc New York the Socialists are very active. A brutal murder has been committed at New York, the'victim being a farm servant. The relatives have been arrested on suspicion. A large number of expatriated Russian Jews have decided to take refuge in Palestine. The French have commenced military operations at Annan, in India—the Chinese Peninsula. The ex-Empress Eugenie is lying dangerously ill at Paris. On the 4th instant Mr. Gladstone was indirectly assailed re the statement that Parnell, and the other released suspects, were prepared to espouse the cause of law and order if the matter of the arrears of rent to landlords were satisfactorily settled. Mr. Forster has warned the Government against the danger of purchasing obedience to the law by paying blackmail to lawbreakers. The resolutions for the establishment of a peasant proprietary have been withdrawn in consequence of the altered position. The Conservative party and Press treat the action of the Government with ridicule, and regard it as a total reversal of their former policy, and an admission that the attempt to pacify Ireland is a failure. Emboldened by the recent concessions, the Irish Land League have redoubled their efforts to obtain Home Rule, and have issued addresses calling on the tenantry to pay no rent till Home Rule is granted, and other concessions promised by the Government are fulfilled. The Land Leaguers have started out upon a fresh career of sedition, and three of the most violent of them have been arrested at Tralee, and committed to prison.
