TAKAPUNA. JOCKEY CLUB. The Takapuna racecourse, which has recently been laid off, and on which the first race meeting under the auspices of the club will be held on the 27th instant, is well and conveniently situated at about half a mile distance from either of the ferry wharves at the North Shore, and on the race day traps will be laid on to meet the steamers and convey passengers to the course. The flat race course is perfectly level, oval in shape, and three-quarters of a mile round. There are no sharp turns, hut some of the ground is new, and the course will in all probability be heavy after the recent wet weather. The Steeplechase course, which twice round covers a little less than 3J miles, is fair hunting country. The hills are not severe, but some stiff jumps over mud fenees, gorse hedges, stone walls, and a water jump will furnish exciting sport, and the pace if at all fast, will test the mettle of the steeplechase horses. At the same time the course is not severe enough to shut any decent cross-country horse out of the race. Should the weather prove auspicious there will be as large a gathering at the North Shore on the race day as there has been at any time during the season. The new steamer built for the Ferry Company will be ready to ply on the occasion, and the company having arranged with the Harbour Board for the use of the whole of the tee at Queen-street Wharf on the 27til, the steamers will be kept constantly running, and every precaution will be taken to prevent overcrowding.
