[VBOM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENTS. ] Hamilton", Tuesday. The brethren of the Masonic Lodge Beta intend celebrating the anniversary of St. John's Cay (the 27 th inst.) with a Masonic dinner, to which not only members of the lodge, bat Masons residing in the district are inrited. Mr. Kenneth McDonald has given, in seems, £1400 for the business premises, corner of Victoria and Hood streets, lately owned by Mr. N. B. Cox. Tenders for the unsold goods of Mr. If. B. Cox, are invited by the trustees of the estate up to noon of the 24th instant.

Another vacancy has occurred among the teachers of the Hamilton West school, Miss Wylie, formerly of the Brookaide school, Waiuku, having left. Mis 3 Wylie was a uncertificated teacher,but the school committee intend applying to the Education Board for two uncertificated or pupil teacher* in her place, wisely considering that with a large number ef young children two pupil teachers will be able to keep the children in better control, and at the same time be each of them as competent for teaching little children, perhaps more so than a certificated teacher.

Mr. E. Wayte has laid another information against T. C. Hammond of obtaining money under false pretences, making three charges in all. They oome on for hearing on Friday next. The only business done at the ratepayers' m.eting at Tamahere was the agreement to stop certain roads in th. district. The Highway Board met afterwards, bat beyond passing a few accounts, transacted no other business.

The following ars the names of the pupils who have come forward from the various Waikato public schools as candidates for the district scholarships offered by the Board of Education, the examination for which is now going on in the Hamilton Weat School-1 room, namely :—Cambridge : Albert F. Ellis, Robert McVeagh, Henry Rhodes and Elizabeth Nixon. Hautapu: Edward McLaurin. Te Awamutu: Daniel Long, Annie Devin, Mary Lewis, Ada Mary Tristram. Hamilton West: Elizabeth B. Murray and Leonora E. Salmon. Hamilton East: Martha Gelling and Lilly Hunter. For certificate of proficiency as teacher, the only candidate is Miss Susan Murray, of Hamilton West. Cambridge, Tuesday. Mr. Wells has received a letter from the Auckland Gas Company in reply to his communication asking for information and assistance in starting gas works in Cambridge, and Mr. Atkinson, their engineer, will at once proceed to Cambridge to render all assistance in his power in organising the necessary arrangements, and preparing the plans and estimates necessary. People in other townships have looked upon this movement for lighting Cambridge with gas as mere talk, but the matter has been seriously taken up by the business men of the place, and when Cambridge has once put its foot down it never goes back. The Resident Engineer is now engaged laying off the railway line so that working plans may be prepared. Mr. Knorpp, C.E., is also in thi3 district inspecting the proposed Tauranga and Rotorua lines of road, and arranging for the railway terminus here. Alexandra, Tuesday. The natives are pleased at the promptness of the action of the Government in at once | calling for tenders for the erection of the bridge over the Waipa above their township. I The bridge, when erected, will open up wheeled communication between the native settlements beyond the line and the township.
