JOURNALISTIC LONDON.
« A paper in the Octoljer number of Harper's Magazine, to which many people will turn with interest, is from the pen of Mr. Joseph Hatton ca "Journalistic London." "The history of Fleet Street," says Mr. Hatton, "would be the history of the rise and progress of the London press." He gives a short sketch of the more famous courts and their legends, telling the story of some of their more famous occupants. In his account of Punch, its founder and editors, it seems odd to read that "Mark Lemon was succeeded by Mr. Tom Taylor, who in his turn was followed by Mr. Shirley Brooks." Much of the paper is devoted to a history of the Daily News, which is " commended as new in many respects and true in all." There are por- . of Mr. Hill, Mr Archibald Forbee, Mr. Justin McCarthy, and Mr. Kobinson, manager. On the appearance of the second number Charles Dickens wrote the following to the editor : —"Sir, —Will you excuse my calling your attention to a variety of typographical errors in your first number? Several letters are standing on their heads, and several others seem to have gone out of town; while others, like people who are drawn for the Militia, appear by deputy, and are sometimes very oddly represented. I have an interest in the subject, as I intend te be, if you will allow me, your constant reader. January 21, 1540." The following was Mr. Dickens's editorial reply :—"We can assure our good-humoured correspondent that we are quite conscious of the errors he does us the favour to point out so leniently. The very many inaccuracies and omissions in onr first impression are attributable to the disadvantageous circumstances attending the production of a first number.
