AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.
The tenth grand carnival of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club will take place today in the Domain Cricket-ground. The programme is an excellent one. There will be close contests, good fields, and a larger amount of general interest than has been hitherto manifested ; and, should the weather prove propitious, there will be without doubt one of the largest gatherings on the ground which has ever collected to witness these sports. The acceptances for the various handicaps are very good. An extra amount of interest is evinced by outsiders on account of the many new aspirants. The fact that no certain winner can be picked for any event is a high compliment to the handicapper. A'sporting correspondent, "Both Ends," says*:—" Although I may say that I can with safety mention a few who cannot win, perhaps the fault is on the right side, for it is better to have the best men with all their work before them to be with the field at the finish, than to have those who Btart first forming a very poor tail. However, it makes it all the better sport for the onlookers, and all the harder to do what I am just going to try, viz., to ' spot' the winners. For the Maiden, which is the first race on the programme, there will be a good field of about seven. Montague, Stewart, and Gould should be three first, and Stewart the first of the three. For the A.A.A.C. Cup in the 100 Yards final heat, I expect to see White and Davy filling the two first places, and Sibbin third. The 200 Yards should bring Watson, White, ami Davy to the front. The 300 Yard race will entirely depend on the result of the 200 Yards race, as those who are out of the Cup then will reserve themselves for the Hurdles or Quarter-mile. I like the chance of Gould, Tom Sibbin, and Watson for the Hurdles, and will expect them to finish in this order. Lees and Kinder cau distance the rest in the Quarter-mile race and 1000 Yards, but will reverse position ; I mean Lees will win the Quarter-mile, with Kinder second, and Kinder will win the 1000 Yards, with Lees second. Waters is not fit, but can run into third place, or perhaps better. These, with other sports, such as Tug of War, High Jump, Long Jump, &c., fill up a splendid day's sport, and will well repay the visitor."
