The Daily News to-day publishes telegrams from Constantinople stating that in consequence of the difficulty which has arisen with the Greek Government the Porte now threatens to order the closing of all European postoffices in Constantinople. An official statement is published to the effect that prior to his execution | Lefroy, the Brighton murderer, withdrew his confession that he had murdered Lieutenant Roper at Chatham. THE IRISH CONVENTION. Washington, November 30. The Irish National Convention has again commenced its sittings at Chicago. Over one thousand delegates are present.

GERMANY. Berlin, November 30. Since the opening of the German Parliament on the 17th ultimo, debates of a disorderly, stormy character have taken place almost daily. In the Reichstag the Progressist members have made violent speeches, in which strong personal attacks have been made upon the Imperial Chancellor. Prince Bismarck, in reply, has accused the Progressists of desertion from, and hostility to the cause of the Left, and has asserted that he has in consequence been forced to ask the allegiance of the Centre, or Ultramontane party. The debate in the Reichstag continues. It is announced that the Prussian Government has decided, in view of the friendly relations now existing with the Church of Rome, to appoint a Minister to the Vatican. FIGHTING IN BOSNIA. Vienna, November 30. Telegrams are to hand reporting that further severe fighting has taken place between the Bosnian insurgents and the Austrian troops. The latter were defeated, and suffered the loss of twenty killed. LONDON MARKETS. London, November 30. There are no changes to report in the money market, or in New Zealand securities. A NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTION. Sydney, December 2. The election, for the seat for Carcoar, in the Legislative Assembly, rendered vacant by the expulsion of Mr. E. A. Baker, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr. G. Campbell by a majority of 150 over the late member, who was a candidate for reelection. CRICKET MATCH. •Sydney, December 2. A cricket match between the English team and twenty-two of Bathurst was commenced to-day. The Englishmen in their first innings scored 115, and at the close of the day's play the Twentytwo had fifteen wickets down for 43 runs. ADELAIDE GRAIN MARKET; Adelaide, December 2. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Bridget Payne was committed for trial for setting fire to a house in Barbadoes-street. A neighbour gave evidence that Payne had a down on her, and on Wednesday her house was set on fire during her absence. Kerosene and matches were found about it. The damage done was not great. The Turner Opera Company made a great impression on opening last night, and will probably do a cood business. The promoters of the East and West Coast Railway, having recently been in communication with the Chamber of Commerce, wzth the view of securing a commission to report on the practicability of the proposed railway, that body has nominated Messrs. "rr\ r, S ht - Beaumont, and C. Whiteford. The Bishop of Nc»lson publishes in the rimes this morning a series of telegrams between the Hon. W. Rolleston and himself. Mr. Rolleston asks the Bishop whether It IS correct, as reported, that the Bishop had said to several people that the Government's treatment of the natives had be*n actuated by political considerations, with a view to influencing the elections. The Bishop replied that the statement, whether made or not, appeared to himself evident and harmless, but he protested against the Government requiring of him an account of private conversation. Mr. Rolleston, in answer, said he had not required anything of the kind, but merely wished to ascertain whether the statement which imputed such disgraceful conduct to the Government, was true.
