Vesuvius is again in eruption, sending streams of lava down the northern _slopes._ The Italian Minister of War is inspecting forts on the French frontier. French officers from Piedmont, intending to purchase horses in Italy, have found their purpose thwarted. The Press urges the Government to prohibit the exportation of horses. Cardinal Ledochowski, formally resigns the diocese of Po3en, on account of ill-health. The Vatican communicated with Russia prior to making the announcement public. Count Enrico Compello, arch-priest of the Basilica of St. Peter, who publicly abjured Catholicism, ana entered the little Methodist church on the Pizza Poli, read a discourse, stating among other reasons of objection to the Church, were those preventing a man expressing sentiments towards his country and government which a patriot should cherish. His perversion, considering his high social and ecclesiastical standing, has caused a great sensation. The Geographical Congress at Venice, which was formally opened by the King and Queen of Italy, was addressed by M. de Lesseps, who spoke on the certainty of the Panama Canal. General Turre spoke of the Corinth Canal, and a resolution was adopted favouring the project. A resolution was also adopted expressing a wish that all Geographical Societies should organise a section for commercial purposes, and one, that the Geodetic Commission should aggregate the calculations of geologists, in noting the variations of coasts. The festivities in honour of the-ventry of the Italian troops into Rome in IS6O, was a great success. Crowds made a pilgrimage to Victor Emmanuel's tomb.
