LONDON.

Onr latest advices from London are to the Bth September. From the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's circular of the above date we talce the following quotations : — Money Market. —On the 18th ultimo the directors qf the Bank of England raised the minimum rate of discount from 2J percent., at which it hadstood since the 23tb of April last, to 3 per cent., but as this did not prove sufficient to check the drain to America the rate was a week later advanced to 4 per cent. The Banks of France and Belgium immediately thereafter notified an advance to the same level, and on the following day the Imperial Bank of Germany raised its rate to 5 per cent. The New York money market is watched with great interest, as it seems probable that the main part of any further trans-Atlantic demand for gold will have to be borne by this country, inasmuch as the state of the reserve of the Bank of France would appear to preclude that institution from averting the drain to any considerable extent, and thus repeating its policy of last year. Stock Markets.—The slightly firmer tone apparont in the money market at the date of our last issue by this route caused some weakness in most classcs of securities. Colonial securities have not been exempt from the general decline. New South Wales securities are 1 lower. Queensland 6 per cents., ISB2-5 are unaltered, but the 6 per cents. !S9l-6and the 4 per cents. 1913-5 have declined 4 and 2 respectively. Tasmanian 6 per cents. 1395 have declined and the G per cents. 1893*1901, have fallen 3£, whilst the two 4 per cent, issues are from £ to 1 lower. There is no change in "Victorian 5 per cents., but the 6, the 4J, and the 4 per cents are down from 1 to ljd on the month. New Zealand C per cents- and the 5 per cents., 1914, are i steady at the quotations of 11th ultimo, whilst the remaining issues are from 1 to l£ lower as compared ; with the prices ruling on that date. | COLONIAL GOVERNMENT SECURITIES. j u Closing | Interest due. Wool.—The third series of colonial wool sales for the present year opened on the 23rd ultimo. The market was well attended, and for the bulk of the purchases good competition was evinced. Crossbred descriptions, of medium to inferior quality, were apparently slightly below the closing rates of last series, but the quantity submitted to auction was not sufficiently large or diversified in character to admit of the market being thoroughly tested. Merino wool, scoured, washed, and in grease, exhibited but little variation, save in tho case of faulty lots, which, if indifferently scoured, were less readily taken than tho better parcels. Corn Market.—The wheat market has been unusually active during the past month, the heavy and almost continuous rainfall having caused serious damage and delay to the harvest in all parts of the United Kingdom except those districts in which tho crops came early to maturity. Current prices ex granary are as follow South Australian wheat, 56s to 57s per 496!b5; Victorian wheat, 56s to fe7s per 4961b5; New Zealand, long berried, 56s to 58s per ■*G9lbs ; New Zealand, average, 54s to 55s Qd per 4961b5; Australian flour, superfine, 39s to 41s per 2301bs ; Australian flour, household, 37s to 39s per 2Solbs; New Zealand flour, S6s to 38s per 2Solbs; New Zealand oats, fine, ?9s to 33s per Imperial qr. ; New Zealand oats, ordinary feed, 25s to 28s per Imperial qr.; New Zealand barley, malting, 40s to 45s per 4481bs ; New Zealand beans, 46s to 48s per 5041bs ; Australian peas, 38s to 40s per 5041ba. Frozen Meat.—Two shipments of frozen meat consisting of about 10,000 carcases of sheep and 300 quarters of beef, have recently arrived from Melbourne in the steamers Protos and Cuzco. Both are reported to have reached this port in good order. A portion of the mutton by the former vessel has been sold in the Metropolitan Meat market at from 6d to 7d per lb by the carcase, and it is understood that tho shipment by the latter steamer will shortly be dealt with in a similar way. liAbbit Skins.—Fair to good skins, ljlbs to ljlbs per dozen, 19d to 24d per lb ; common and ordinary poor season, ljlbs to Ijlbs per dozen, 13ld to per lb; medium, lib to lglbs per dozen, 12d to ISJd per lb; small and suckers, $lb to |lb per dozen, 8d to 14ld por lb. Tahiti, of which 5 bales were sold at Hid per lb, is scarcely asked for. Copra.—To-day's quotations show an improvement on the mcnth.
