[BY CABLE.] [reuter's cablegram.] AYOUB KHAN AGAIN DEFEATED. Calcutta, October 13 Telegrams have been received from Afghanistan, announcing that another great battle has been fought between the forces of the Ameer and Ayoub Khan, resulting in the complete defeat of the latter. HERAT OCCUPIED. Calcutta, October 13. Further telegrams moreover report that the Ameer has since occupied Herat, and that Ayoub has fled to Persia, but this intelligence requires confirmation. MR, GLADSTONE'S SPEECH AT GUILDHALL. Loxdon, October 12. Mi , . Gladstone was to-day presented at Guildhall with an address, adopted last month by the Court of Common Council of the City of London, desiring him, in consideration of the estimation in which he is held, to permit his bust to be placed in Guildhall. Mr. Gladstone in receiving the address thanked the Council for the honour proposed to be done to him, and expressed his willingness to sit for the preparation of the bust. Mr. Gladstone took occasion to confirm the report current this morning, that Mr. Parnell had been arrested, and spoke in justification of the Government in the matter.

MR. GLADSTONE ON GENERAL POLITICS AND IRISH AFFAIRS. London, October 12. In his speech at Guildhall to-day, Mr. Gladstone chose the opportunity to contradict the reports which have been current that there has been dissension in the Cabinet, and stated that perfect harmony pervades among the members of the Ministry. He made no further allusion to the arrest of Mr. Parnell. He said that this step was one towards she strict enforcement of respect for the law. The Government, he added, did not fear the people of Ireland, and it was necessary to put a stop to the corruption and terrorism of professed agitators. In regard to the state of affairs in the Transvaal, Mr. Gladstone stated that the Government were determined to abide by the terms of the convention agreed to between the Royal Commissioners and the Boer triumvirate.

CONSERVATIVE MEETING. Losdon, October 12. A large Conservative meeting was held to-night, at Newcastle-on-Tyne, when addresses were delivered by the Marquis of Salisbury and Sir Stafford Northcote. The former, in. the course of his remai-ks, expressed himself as satisfied with the policy being pursued by the Government in regard to Egypt. Sir Stafford Northcote stated his opinion that external pressure both controlled and weakened the action o£ the present Administration, aud both speakers urged that greater vigour "was necessary on the part of the Government in dealing with Ireland.

PA-RNELL REPORTED ARRESTED. London, October 12. It is currently reported here this morning that the arrest of Mr. Parnell has been ordered by the Government, and that he is now in custody. The rumour, however, requires confirmation. THE ARREST OF MR. PARNELL. London, October 12. Accounts to hand from Ireland state that Parnell was arrested at his hotel in Dublin, under the warrant of the Viceroy, issued in accordance with the provisions of the Coercion Act. He was conveyed to Kilmainham gaol, and will there be kept in custody. THE IRISH LAND LEAGUE. London, October 13. A meeting of the Irish National Land League was held to-day, when Mr. Dillon was appointed to replace Mr. Parnell in the leadership. THE ITALIANS PROTESTING AGAINST FRANCE IN TUNIS. Paris, October 12. Intelligence is to hand from Tunis that the Italian Consul resident there has sent a protest in to M. Roustan, the French Resident, against the occupation of the city by the French troops. LONDON MARKETS. London, October 12. Consols have declined to 98|. New Zealand securities: The 5 per cent. 10-40 loan is 101£j- the 5 per cent. ISB9 loan is 104.V; the 4i per cent. 1879-1904 loan is 98 J. Adelaide wheat, ex store, is quoted at 57s per 4961b5., a decline of one shilling; New Zealand wheat also has fallen a shilling, and is now quoted at 555, ex store. Adelaide flour remains at 42s per 2801b5., ex warehouse. Best Scotch pig-iron, No. 1, free on board in the Clyde, is 535. London, October 13. Consols remain at 9S|. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £9,575,000. The bank rate of discount remains at 5 per cent. The market rate is 4i. New Zealand "securities are without quotable change. There is no change to report in the market for Australian breadstuff's. "Australian Tallow : Best beef is 41s 6d ; best mutton is 455.
