DEATH OF MR. GEORGE WILLIAMSON.

We regret to record the death of another old colonist, in the person of Mr. George Williamson, . the well-known tobacconist, of Queen-street, who died early yesterday morning, at the comparatively early age of 55. He was formerly a glover and hosier in business in London, and sailed from that port for Auckland in the latter part of 1855. He commenced business here as a fruiterer, in a shop adjacent to the Herald publishing office. He shortly after shifted to the other side of the street, and was burnt out in the fire at Mr. W. J. Young's stores. He then commenced in his present premises, where he had been established for 19 years, subsequently opening a branch at the corner of Vulcan Lane, iu Somervell's block of buildings. At the opening of the Thames goldfields, he, with the late Mr. Hopkins, chemist, sent down a prospecting party to that district, and as the outcome of it he became a large shareholder in the Cure, and afterwards in the Red Queen, and- also had numerous interests in various mines on the field. Ho also opened .a branch place of business on the Thames. He has been ailing off and on for some time past from a complication of complaints—asthma, and disease of liver and kidneys—but has only been confined to his bed about a fortnight. On Saturday last, he was taken for a drive round Mount Eden, and he seemed slightly, better, but his me-' dical attendants, Drs. Wright and Dawson, from the natnre of his disease, entertained no hope ,of his recovery, and he . died as above stated, yesterday morning; _• Mr. Williamson leaves a. widow and thirteen children, besides five grandchildren. Two of his daughters are married, one to Mr.J.R.Hanna(of the firm of Hemus and Banna), and: the other to Mr. Jamieson, jun. Deceased was a native of Maidenhead, near Windsor. Mr. Williamson was much esteemed and respected as a'citizen and a tradesman; for his Straightforward and genial disposition; and the news of his death will be received with general regret.
