IRISH LAND BILL, i London, July 28. ■In the House of' Commons, to-day, the Irish Land Bill was reported to the House with amendments made in committee, and the third reading was fixsd for next sitting. ' London, July 29. The Irish Land Bill came up for the third reading in the House of Commons last night. A few extreme Tory : members forced a division, which resulted in the Bill being read a third time, and passed by 220 to 14, amidst much enthusiasm.

THE BOER DIFFICULTY. Cafe Town, July 29. Telegrams_to hand, from Pretoria report that the settlement .of the Transvaal question is how expected to be arrived at immediately, between the Royal Commission and the Boer leaders: It has been arranged that England.shall have full right of passage of troops in the Transvaal, and complete control of the foreign relations of the Boers. The duties •of the British resident will be similar to those of Consul-General.

DEFEAT OF THE AMEER. , Calcutta, July 28. Telegrams have been received from Kandahar, announcing that a battle •was fought yesterday between the forces of Ayoub Elian and thoseof the Ameer,. resulting in the defeat of the latter. One of the Ameer's regiments deserted, and joined Ayoub Khan, and the rest of Abdurrahman's force fled, after losing all their guns and baggage. Calcutta, July 28 (Later). Further telegrams from - Afghanistan', report that the battle between Ayoub Khan's and the Ameer's troops ■was fought at Karezeiatta (Karezillaiyar), a short distance south of ; Kandahar. Since their defeat, all .' the Ameer's cavalry have joined Aypiib Khan, 1 whose force has been materially strengthened. The Ameer's garrison in the city of Kandahar is reported to be very weak, and unable to offer any strong resistance to Ayoub Khan. MASSING TROOPS FOR AFGHANISTAN. Calcutta, July 29. In consequence of Ayoub Khan's successes over the Ameer's troops in Kandahar, orders have been issued by the Indian Government for the concentration of a British force at Quettah, on the Afghan frontier, and several regiments have already left India for that place. THE FRENCH SECURING TUNIS. Pakis, July 28. News has been received from Tunis that: since the capture of the town of Gabes, the French forces have occupied the Island of Gherba, in the Gulf of Gabes. LONDON MARKETS. London, July 29. Consols have risen and are quoted to-day at 101£. New Zealand 5 per cent. 10-40 loan is 100 i; New Zealand 1889 5 per cent, loan is 104; New Zealand 4 J per cent. 1879-1904 loan is 103. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, is 48s. . New Zealand wheat, ex ship, is 48s 6d. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,610,000 quarters. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, is 34s Gd. Australian tallow : Best beef, 34s 6d ; best mutton is 365.
