HIGHWAY DISTRICT MEETINGS.

WHAU. The annual meeting of the ratepayers of tho Whau Highway District -was held on Thursday evening in the Public-hall, when after, the usual preliminaries, Mr. B. B. Khiloch was called to tho chair. The Chairman requested Mr. Bollard, chairman of tho outgoing Board, to read tho balance-sheet foe the past year. The total iucomo of the Board was £280 2s lid; expenditure, £250 Is Gd; leaving unexpended, £21 Is Gd. Ho called attention to the fact that the revenue was small, owing to the nou-payment. of subsidies. He regretted that tho Board had been cnllod upon by tho Government to taka charge of the. Great North Road running through, the district, tho Board having been legally advised that they would be respoil* Bible for the state: that it was in. However, towards the repair they had been able to secure a sum of £97, being part of tho toll money agaiust this new charge on the district. Messrs. Bollard, Thomas, Aickin, Garrett, and Buchanan were re-elected members of the Board, Messrs, Forsyth and Bell auditors, and Messrs. Tait and; O'Sullivan fenceviewers. The special business, changing the name of the district, having been mentioned in the advertisement calling tho meeting, Mr. Buchanan moved that stops bo taken to change tho name from Whau to that of Bivensdale. This step, he said, waa not without precedent. JDedwood had been changed into the more euphonious name of Ponsonby, Stokes' Point hist into that of Woodside and afterwards to Nprthcote. But they had better reasons than either, for the namo was most indefinite. The naiao was popularly applied to that country extending from within two miles of Auckland to nine miles further on the Great; North Road. Ho had heard of a. man being occupied a day travelling in the Whau in Bearch of an address. What they wished was that the name of that part of tho district of 'which the post-office was tho centre should be changed, and if tho changing of its name involved the change of namo of highway and educational districts it would not matter, as it would even then be much more definite than tho present one. He moved that tho name be changed. Mr. Bollard in a neat speech seconded tho motion. Mr. Owen moved that the name be not changed, the amendment being seconded by Mr. Jones. The amendment was ]jut and lost, and the original motion was earned by a large majority. Mr. Buchanan moved, Mr. Bollard seconded, and it was carried, I "That tho Chairman of the now Board call a [ meeting of tho inhabitants for the purpose of considering the change of name of tho district." Mr. Jones moved and Mr. Lake seconded the motion, "That tho Chairman of the incoming Board call a meeting at an early date to consider whether it is advisable to establish a public pound in tho district." This was agreed to. At the close of the annual meeting the new trustees met, when Mr. Bollard was elected chairman and treasurer, and Mr. Buchanan was elected secretary to the Board.
