WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.

[from our own correspondents. 1 - Hamilton, Friday. Nothing has been heard or seen of Mrs. Luhrs which throws any further light on her mysterious disappearance. Supposing that she had not drowned herself when she left home on the Sunday morning, at 5.a.m., but had wandersd into the scrub, she muat have perished from exposure, as we have had some hard frosts, and a considerable amount of rain during the week. It is said that as likely as not the Kin" and party will go down to Point Russell, and the King, it is known, has expressed a wish to visit Mangere, which is his native place. A very little, it is said, would induce Tawhiao and his principal chiefs to visit Auckland, especially if it could be so arranged that he could meet tho Royal Princes.

. Cambridge, Friday. Tho outcome of the present political position is anxiously looked for here, as deciding the fate of our railway. At a meeting of the railway committee, called to consider the alarming intelligence that.Mr, Vickermau's, the Government engineer, estimate was £20,000 higher than that of Mr. Breakell, for the trial line laid before the commissioners. The difference was for the most part explained, so that the matter of extra cost will not bo sufficient to deter she present' Government, if they remain in office, from carrying out their promises. It was shown that Mr. Vickerman estimated £6000 as compensation for land taken, whereas all the landowners but two are still willing to give the land for tho line for nothing, and some £S0 will meet the claims of these two exceptions. The deviation of a third of a mile at the Hamilton end of the line, which is not necessary, will amount to another £3000 or £4000, and the' substitution of 531b. for 401b. rails by the Government Engineer will make another £3000. As Cambridge would be the terminus of this line and it would only take the Cambridge traffic, 401b. rails it was thought would be amply sufficient. Indeed, the Government must have a sufficient supply of these along the Waikato and Auckland line itself, which were replaced not long ago by 531b. rails,, to furnish rails for the whole of the proposed Cambridge-branch line.
