LAW AND POLICE.
POLICE COURT.— Saturday. [Dcforo R. C. Barstow, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —Five persons were punished for ordinary offences, and Jane Rolf was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour for habitual drunkenness. A Rowdy Customer. —Arthur Napier was charged with having been drunk and disorderly, with damaging Constable Walker's uniform-trousers, also with destroying potplants and assaulting the owner, John Walker. He was convicted on all the charges, and ordered to pay fines and costs amounting to £3 3s Gd, or (in default) a mouth's imprisonment with hard labour. Shipping and Seamen's Act.—JamesDon-. aid, an articled seaman of the brigantiueRyno, was charged with being absent from his vessel without leave, but as the captain was willing to receive him back, a fine of 5s and costs was imposed, and an order made to have him placed on board. Larceny.—Mary Davis wa3 charged with stealing a smoothing-iron, worth 6s Gd, the property of George Bartlett. The offence, was proved, but as the accused has hitherto borne a good character, the conviction was recorded against her, and she was discharged from custody with a caution.
