WELLINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Saturday. DISMISSED TELEGRAPH OPERATORS. The much-vexed question of the dismissed telegraph operators -will be again brought before the House on Tuesday next, when Mr. Stewart will ask why their names were forwarded to the Telegraph Departments in the Australian colonies, and whether the Government received any reply to the communication sent ? There is a good deal of strong feeling on this matter. HARE'S SYSTEM. On Wednesday Dr. Wallis will move, "That this House is of opinion that the system of proportional or personal representation, known as Hare's system, ought to bo adopted in the promised Representation Bill, or in a Bill which the Premier at Leeston had in view for the reform of the Legislative Council." LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENT. * Sir George Grey is to move on Thursday next for leave to withdraw his " Bill toprovide for the establishment of a better system of Local Self-government in New Zealand." Sir George is singularly reticent about the contents of this good Bill for giving everybody everything. Its advent is looked for for with much curiosity. THE UNION S.S. COMPANY. Mr. James Mills, the managing director of the Union S.S. Company, is in Wellington. It transpires that the directors have ordered two more large steamers, named the Wairarapa and Hauraki, to be built at Home, to be the same size as the Manapori ; and the former is almost identical, but a little more after the style of the Wakatipu, that is, more cargo room, less speed, and passenger accommodation. NO GOSSIP. No political gossip is stirring.
