Subscriber, Waikato, writes :—"Will you kindljinform me through the Hekilb, whether red lead or strychnine is the cheaper and more efficacious in destroying sparrows?"— Strychnine is much dearer than red lead. It is the more powerful poison, and it is not likely that sparrows would eat grain coated with red lead, oven though they were hungry. The colour would deter them from doing so, for sparrows are very watchful, and not a little distrustful of kindness shown to them.
