Mrs. Stubbs gave birth to a son, and about tbe same time Mr. H. C. Skifßngton, a saloon passenger, died of decline. He had been ailing throughout tho voyage. Captain Braddock reports :—Left the Downs on Deoember 5, tho pilot, was landed 1 at Portland on the 9th, and we got dear of the

c hannel in grand style. From thence to the Equator, light winds and variables prevailed, the N.E. trades being apparently suspended. A short ta&t severe gale was encountered off the C&pe Verne Islands, which blew* with huriicane force for 5 hours, on the night of January 1, the ship being hove-to. Tbe Equator was crossed on the 23rd January, the average speed from Portland being 05 miles per day. Shortly after leaving S. E. tr.rdes, the ship Lord Wendin, bound from Melbourne to London, was spoken, having made a *o far exceedingly long passage ef fifty-.s'even days. A visit was made to her'by Mr. Stevens, surgeon of the Oxford, and letters posted. When iu of the Three Kings, the westerly winds, which had been blowing for so long, ceased, and came from the eastward, with light fine weather. THE WRECK OF THE JANU3. Our Mangouui correspondent writes on March 3lst : "The whaling barque Janx.s, Captdn Gifford, as reported ashore last weo'c by telegraph, at tbe entrance to the Awanui Harbour, U likely to become a total wreck. : It appears that the captain mistook the entrance for Maugonui, and after Snding out iiis mistake, he immediately wore the ship, and in doing so, she ran on the rock?. The captain did all in bis power to «a*e the ship, but was unable to.do so. He commenced discharging, after cutting away the topmasts to ease the ship. The sailors, after gettiug all their effects out;, refused to work unless paid 10s per day. This, the captain refused to give. The men weie sent round to Mangonui, whence they will be forwarded to some American port. Messrs. Lane and Browu have taken tho contract to unload the ship, and if possible, to float her. and if it is not possible to float her, they will * wreck * her. The captain who is in bad health, feels bis position keenly, and great sympathy is felt for him under the circumstances. They are about fifteen months out from home, and have 350 barrels of oil 011 board, besides some whaleboue.'' Mr. Henry Niccol has launched a cutter of 19 tons from his yard at the North Shore. She is named the Dolphin, aud ia intended for tia3iug on the coast. ' The uew stern-wheel steamer Waihou, built by Messrs. Fraser and Tiune, made a trial trip on Saturday, the 9th April, when everything worked hmootbly and satisfactorily. The vessel is 65 feet long, with the paddle wheel, 10 feet diameter, abaft, making a total length of about 7S feet by 1G feet G inches b*am, and 3 feet 6 inches iu depth. She is built of iron, and her bottom is perfectly flat, and covered with planking two inches thick, which makes ifc safer in the case of snags. Her bow is of the scow shape, made so, to pass over the water. She has ten water-tight compartments, and it is so arranged that they can be pumped out with the donkey engine. The paddle-rvheol is diiven by a pair of horizontal engines with geaviug, the pinion on the engine shaft is onesixth the size of the spur wheel en the paddle shaft. The engines were working about 200 revolutions per minute, and the paddle-wheel about 33 revolutions, the vessel going about 7 nrr les per hour, which speed will no doubt be increased, when the machinery gets over the stiffness usual with all new machinery. The draft of water, with coal and water on board, is 2 feet aft and 1 foot 3 inches forward, and with about 15 tons of cargo she will draw about 2 feet. She is capable of carrying about 25 tons of cargo. Altogether, the Waihou seems to be just what is required for the river trade. The shipping returns for the port of AuckUud for tho quarter ending March 31st are as follows :— JtNTKUKD I.VW.UiDS.
