CHARRING OF TIMBER.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The charring of timber as a protection from t'.redo was by Mr. J. Buchanan in a paper read before the WelliDgton Philosophical Society, 25th November, 1876, and published in. Vol.ix., p. 183, of the Trans-N. Z. Inst. This mode of protecting timber for marine works is shown to have had seventeen years' trial at Etobart Town with perfect success. W. D.
