LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.

jby telegraph, trom our correspondent. J Wellington, Monday. GOVERNMENT NEWS FROM THE WEST COAST. ~B D I>-G native affairs on the West Coast f this island, I hear that the latest telegrams received by the Government are to ♦Hp effect that the Native Minister, Colonel Roberts, and Mr. Hurathouse proceeded to £° "Vrmed Constabulary Camp at Stoney TRiver last Friday, and thence crossed le Whiti''s northern boundary to select neve camping ground situated about a mile southward of Waiweranui stream and therefore within the boundaries of Te Whiti's ground. The camp was pitched there to-day, ana road-making pushed on vicorously in a southerly direction. It is estimated that the weather being favourable the road will proceed two or three miles waeklv. There are no indications of any resistance on the part of To Whiti and 'i ohu, notwithstanding the advance mto Faribaka country. It is probable that Te W hiti will take an opportunity of proving that the preEent situation is what he foretold. Some of hi 3 followers assert that road-making is beinc really done by the constabulary for Te Whiti, and that they arc unconsciously working for him as his . Be " a^ 3 ' Te Whiti is now endeavouring to instil the idea that they will receive all their land back, and that the roads now being constructed by the constabulary will improve the land for the use of the Maoris thus fulfilling his prophecy that the Europeans would become servants of the Maoris. Te Whiti andTohu sent presents of food to Major Goring and the men, including sheep, pigs, poultry, and potatoes. Ihe constabulary and the natives at the locality of the new camp continue on friendly terms. The Native Minister will remain a few days at Opus.
