A curious example of the facility with which divorce can be obtained in Switzerland is related in the Chroniqneur of Freiburg. A naaive of theValais, residing at Lausanne, had been married for- years to a woman by whom he had four children, when, in 1878, he engaged in his business a Madame D., a person of some personal attraction,, who had already been married and divorced. She became his mistress, and soon after he divorced his wife to marry her, but this union was not happy; her misconduct became notorious, and the man has now applied to the tribunal for a divorce from this second wife with' the intention of remarrying the first. Pierre Vjjlconr, a Frenchman of Lockport, N.Y., claims to have invented a deep-seatele-phoneby which vessels can be kept in'constant communication with the shore while crossing the ocean. Be has discovered how to insulate a single wire so that immersion in water does not impair its transmission of electricity, and this wire is to be paid out from a cigar-shaped metallic float, thirty feet long, in tow of the vessel. Leaden sinkers are 'to be automatically detached every 200 miles to keep _the wire on the ocean's bed. : ' In several states of Europe the census has recently afforded evidence of the superior longevity of women. Of centenarians the proportion is two, hundred and forty-one women to one hundred and, forty-one men in Italy; two hundred and twenty-nine women to onehundred and eighty-three men in Austria; and ..five.', hundred and twenty-six women to five hundred and'twenty-four men •'in Hungary.
