BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Tiie fortnightly meeting of the Board of I Education was held yesterday. Present: Mr; Moat, in the chair; Messrs. Prime, Dargaviile, Luke, May, and His Worship the Mayor (Mr. T. Peacock). The minuteso£ last meeting were read and confirmed. Exkcutivjs Committee.—The report of the Executive Committee was read and adopted. The Committee recommended an outlay of £4 10s from school funds,to provide fire grates for Newton West School; that a month's leave of absence be granted to Mr. Phillips, head teacher, Waiokaraka School, on account of illness, and that Mr. A. Hisking hava charge of the bchool during Mr. Phillips's absence; that the scale of teachers' salaries for June quarter as submitted be approved. The committee had forfeited the deposit of £15 lodged by John Cornwall with his tender for sohool buildings it Maraetai. They recommendod that the district school committee of Kaitaia be asked to procure a larger room for sohool purposes. Agricultural College. — Mr. O'Sullivan (inspector) stated that circulars had been received from the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College for circulation in regard to the agricultural classes.. The Chairman said that Mr. Rolleston, the Minister for Education, said that the Government were waiting to see how this one would act before establishing others.

AKAroHCE.—Mr. Campbell's claim for compensation was referred to the Executive •Committee.

akatapu.—Grant for fencing declined, and Board considers charge for cleaning excessive. Elleeslib.—The offer of a teacher's house, price £260, was referred the Executive Committee. Katikati.—Mr. John Cornwall's tender, £3SI, for the erection of a teacher's house, was accepted, and his tender, £301, for the lower No.' 3 school, was also accepted. Mangapai.—Re a claim for rent for the . Wesleyan chapel lately used for school purposes. The committee reported unfavourably, and the Board refused to entertain the application. Mount Albfrt. —A majority of the school committee recommended that the new school should be built on the old site. It was agreed to adopt the site, and call for tenders for the erection of the new school. Mount Koskill.—The application was from the committee for an addition to the school site. It was agreed to apply to tho Waste Lainds Board for the increased area required. Uhinejhjki.—The contractor asked for the return of ;hi3 deposit on his contract for school building at Hikutaia. The Board declined to accede to the request. Pokbte.—This was an application for the erection of a teacher's house. The luspector recommended it as an urgent necessity. The application was granted. Tairda. —An application to have the flchool house lined. The Inspector said it was badly required, but he was not aware whether the land had yet bean convoyed to the Board. It was agreed to have the work done, subject to the conveyance of the site being completed. TapU.—An application for a new school house. Referred to the Executive Committee. The claim was urged on the score that a good deal of homestead land was being taken up in the district, and that increased accommodation was required.

Mang ere. —A petition for anew school, to be erected near Mangere Hill, was sent in by the residents. The present school was sufficient in its own neighbourhood, but the number of children round the site which they recommended, in a radius of a mile and a half, was 130, as against forty within the same radius of the present site. The present school committee, they urged, did not represent the educational interests of the district, as they were all proposed in a body, and electsd at a thin attendance on a very wet night. The petition was read in support of the school on the site near Mangers Bill, urging the convenience it would be, and they would contribute £30 toward the erection of a school on this site.—Mr. Luke said a public meeting had been held in the district, at which the site oa which the present school exists was decided upon.—A deputation was in waiting to urge the prayer of the petition, .but the Board had previously decided against, receiving deputations, and therefore declined to admit them, although the question was put to the vote. It was agreed to reply to the letter, that the Board saw no reason to depart from the previous resolution arrived at, .to build on the old site. Whangarei High School.—The application was with regard to the services of the masters, and it was agreed to refer the Board of Qoveruors to the school committee. > AN Arplication.—Miss Crooks, a lady who had recently arrived from Home, applied for an appointment ob teacher uuder the Board. She had been a teacher in the Irish .National Schools, and held the highest second-class certificate. The application was referred to the Inspector. Eureka Hill (Thames).—This was an application to retain the school open. The committee had previously recommended that it should be closed, but now the residents offered a better building, and the petition was forwarded by the committee without comment. It was agreed to refer the matter to the Bchool committee. A considerable amount of routine business and minor applications were dealt with, and the Board then went into committee.
