At the Nautical Court to-day, as to the accident to the stealer Manawatn, the judgment was, that the accident was caused by the salting of the boiler, through the negligence of the engineer, and the certificate of John Symons, chief engineer, was suspended for three months. It started in an upper story, but the brigade were very smartly on the spot with a haud-ens>ine, and put out the flames before they did much damage. The building (a very old one) is in the centre oi a block of old buildings, and was insured for £200 in the National. The .principal damage is caused by the bVeakages of removables from the shops next door. The births during April here and the district were 187 ; marriages, 55 ; deaths, 60. A fire at the Flag Swamp, on the 28th of April, destroyed seven stacks of wheat and one of oats, belonging to Alexander Annan. The stacks were insured in. the Standard Office-for £300. The expenditure in connection with the Industrial School at Lookout Point, for the year ended March 31st, was £3181, of which £2078 was expended in maintenance, and balance in salaries. The average, number of inmates, including the staff, 248; and th« cost a fraction over 5s Id per head'per week. The vital statistics for April are :—Births, 151; marriages, 31; deaths, 67i .
