THE BE AC ONSFIEL-D MINISTRY AND HER MAJESTY. London, April 21. The members of the Beaconsfield Administration, with the exception of the Prime Minister, who was absent, were received by Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor, to-day, when the official leavetaking took place, and the seals of office were delivered up. Her Majesty thanked the retiring Ministers for their services. A FISHERY EXHIBITION. London, April 20. The fishery exhibition at Berlin has been opened, with considerable ceremony, by His Royal Highness Frederick William, Crown Prince of Prussia. PENIS KEARNEY. , London, April 20.
The appeal made to the Superior Court in San Francisco against the sentence passed on Denis Kearney for using seditious language has been dismissed. Kearney, who was liberated on bail during the interim, has been re-arre3ted, and committed .to prison for the period of his sentence—sis months. He is also required to pay the fine of 1000 dollars imposed by Judge Rix.
AFGHANISTAN. London, April 19. The serious aspect of affairs in Afghanistan has induced General Sir F. S. Roberts to open negotiations with some of the leading hostile chiefs, in order to bring about a termination of the war. The British general has modified to some extent the terms of peace originally proposed, and the overtures made have been received in a friendly spirit. Hopes are entertained that many influential sirdars now opposed to the British occupation may be induced to attend a conference for the purpose of deciding as to the means of restoring tranquillity, and placing ths government of the country upon a permanent and satisfactory footing. GLADSTONE AND AUSTRIA. . 7;iondon, April 21. The recent attack by Mr. Gladstone on Austria continues. to excito anger at "Vienna. Mr. Gladstone's explanations, published in a "Vienna journal, states that he speaks only of individuals. THE REPORTED MASSACRE OF BRITISH TROOPS. London, April 21. The reported massacre of British troops by hostile ' Pathans, between Quetta and Candahar, is denied. THE RELATIONS BETWEEN FRAN CE AND RUSSIA. London, April 21. The irritation existing between Russia and France, in consequence of the refusal of the latter to extradite Hartmann, has cooled down. M. Chanzy remains at St. Petersburg, and Count Orloff returns to Paris. i THE PRINCE OF WALES' VISIT TO AUSTRALIA. London, April 22. Inquiries in well-informed quarters show that there is no foundation for the report that the Prince of Wales is about •to visit Australia. THE NEW GOVERNOR OF TAS- I MANIA. London, April 21. Major George Cuming Strahan, R.A., C.M.G., Governor of the Windward Islands, has been appointed Governor of Tasmania.
