THE TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS.

By cablegram we have published the resu"" of the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes, run at Newmarket over the Ho wley Mile. The Two Thousand is the first of the great three-year-old races, and the winner generally becomes a great favourite for the Derby. The result was— Duke of Beaufort's br c Patronel ... ... 1 Duke of Westminster's Mtuncasfcer ... ... 2 SJr. K. 0. Naylor's Abbot 3 The winner was trained by J. Cannon, and is by Musket out of Crytheia. When Musket was imported to Auckland, the sporting writer in Bell's Life wrote :—" It is a great pity that Musket has been allowed to leave the country, as he has been a much neglected sire. It is more than probable that he has left produce behind him that will make his mark, by winning one of the classic races, as for the last two seasons he has been at the Bonehill .paddocks, and has had one of the best mares put to him. Crytheia has always been tha property of the Duke of Beaufort, being one of the animals he retained when he sold his stud. When in training she won some good races, though never any first-class ones. Not having the English Stud Book at hand, I forget at the present mom-.'nt how she is bred. Musket will evidently get good animals if properly mated, and it is evident that they improve with age, a? Petronel's performances last year were not first-class. He started twice only, and won the Troy Stakes at the Newmarket Houghton Meeting from a moderate field. He was then mentioned as a fine improving colt, that would most likely make more than an average horse in another year, Muncaater was trained by R. Peek, at llussley, and. did nothing last season. Abbatt, by the Hermit, was trained by John Daw-sou at Newmarket. He ran four times last season, winning one small race. None of the cracks appear to have run anywhere) therefore Petronel is likely to become a great favourite for the Derby. But at the present time it is impossible to tell what the hordes have been doing. The~hard winter at home will have interfered with the preparation of many of them, especially those trained in the north of England. Musket is at present at the Stud Company's farm at Glen Orchard. He is looking remarkably well, and is well worthy the attention of Southern breeders, as Traducer is gettiug into, years, and they have ho really first-class stallion.
