NEW CALEDONIA.

Noumea, April 17. The Governor left here yesterday morning by one of the men-of-war on a cruise round the coast. This will probably be hia last trip, as he expects to leave for France iu about two mouths. Telegraphic communication has been restored all over the island, and the'sad effects of the recent hurricane are gradually disap. pearing. . The French Government (who were appealed to by the Government of New Caledonia) have refused to vote any compensation for the settlers w-lio suffered by the late revolt. This information has not yet been made public, and will cause great dissatisfaction to everybody. Suicides and murders still continue to be the order of the day. The trunk of a librert, severely mutilated, the head, one arm, and' one leg being cat off, wa3 discovered floating in the harbour. Two men and one woman have been arrested as the suspected murderers, and now await trial. The object of their ctime is said to be that the unfortunate victim was possessed of 70 francs (nearly £3), which they afterwards appropriated. Captain Warren ha«, after an absence of fifteen months, again taken charge of the Ballade Copper Mine, which is reported to be in as flourishing ia condition as ever. The proprietors are unable to get the prepared ore away to' Australia, owing to the wreck of the barque-Sea Shell whilst on her voyage to Pam, rand ithe detention of the Sarah Dreyfus, pending the captain's lawsuit, and the non-arrival of the Loch Lee, consequently there is a large amount of ore on hand ready for shipment. The shaft reported to have been flooded was only partially so, and has now been free for tlie last three weeks.
