CURIOUS PROCEEDINGS. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —There is a great out-cry at present for having absentees taxed, but I think the Cambridge North Highway Trustees have discovered the way to do this most effectually. Last September I paid the Town Board the sum of £2 10s, for clearing the gorse from half the road fronting a town acre of which I was the unfortunate owner. After this, iu November last, I leceived a letter from one of the trustees, pressing me to take £50 for the acre. As I did not accept thi3 offer, a month after I received an account from the Town Board for £S for clearing gorse from off my allotment with the letter, of which the following is a copy:— "Cambridge, 3rd December, 1579. — Dear Sir, —Enclosed please tied account due the Cambridge North Highway District Board, for clearing the gorse off your town allotment. I will be obliged by your forwarding me a cheque for the amount, together with 9s for rates now overdue.—l am, &c., James P. Thomson*, Collector." I have since found out that they have done no clearing ou my allotment, and the Town Board have been trying to get money from me for work which they have not done, and which they had no right to do. It is to be hope 1 they hare not tivated other absentees iu such a scandalous manner.—l am, &c., Thomas Kelly. Wainui, January 13.-
