UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

A meeting of delegates from th.'- various friendly and beneficial societies of Av-ontsaud, was held on 1-r.U December, iii the »odgsro' iii of the MeuV Christian Association Buildings, convened for the purpose o£ discussing the m-liter of getting up a git .id united demonstr ition of all the differca'S orders. Letters were read from the fol* lowing :—Protestant Alliance, saying that# the members had not quite made up their minds, being a new order, only 40 or 50 strong ; Free Templars, Carpenters' and Joiners' Amalgamated Society, and Working Hen's Friendly Aid Society, to the effect that they sent no delegates, as nearly all their members Lelonged to ofclierOrders, and preferred to take part in the demonstration a!on" with them ; ilia American Order of Oddfellows wrote, stating that their Jaivs prohibited them taking part in any public de-mouc-tration, but wislied the project evsry 3ncce as. The secretary was instructed to invite all the country lodgea in Devonport, Howick, Uuehunga, and elsewhere to fcjke part in the demonstration. French, withdrew his amendment, a3:il the motion fixing regatta day, Jauiiary 29, wis unanimously carried.—Upon the motion of Mr. Phillips, seconded by- Mr. Gardiner, it was ajK.-ed that all tho societies taking pari should meet at the firebell,- foot of Grey-sii-'.-efc.—Mr. Dorrington moved, seconded by Mr. Gardiner, "That the demonstration be in the form of a procession, sports in the Domain, and a concert and ball in the evening," which was unanimously agreed to.
