UGLY LITTLE WOMEN.
Tiikiif. is often more charm in the vitality, energy, unselfishness an J gaiety of au ugly little women than in a half dozen tall, queenly beauties, who have been on the watuh all the time to jioao well and mike their points elective. There have been men in tlie world who thought it a line thing to say that " an ugly woman has no phey in the economy of nature." [hit if the records of the world were intelligibly writien, it would be found that u_;ly lnt'.e women have been the heroines, the help-meets of thu heroes. It is th-i function of beauty to get men into trouble. Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Mary Queen of and huudieda of others, where'er they came, broughtealawity. Beauty and anguish have walked hand in hand the downward s ope to death ; and whenever the poet dreams of fair women he ia sure to dream of something doleful. If ho were to have a dream of ugly little women it would be full of brightness, loyalty, devotion, sincerity, fortitude —aud all those otheovatile female qualities that make homer happy. Tall Bjjanty ia epic; Xittle Ugly is lyric, homelike. Just think of what a deepseated compliment is involved in calling irregularity of feature homeliness. It means that she is not for tho ballroom, but for the home, for the friendships that cluster around the hea th, for the merry little sociable, the picnic of off-hand game, or for the darkened sickroom where she brings rest and comfort. For the plainness of feature and insignificance of person of homely women there is often found an earnestness, a wholesouled sweetness and sympathetic expression that win love far quicker than mere beauty.
