PARNELL PUBLIC SCHOOL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sip.,—Seeing you are so stout a champion of our excellent educational system and the proper administration of the funds, and that you take so great an interest in all matters affecting the welfare of the young, I beg to draw your attention to the following, in the confidence that, if you think as I do, you will endeavour to have the evil remedied. You are doubtless aware that the Education Board are building a school for the Parnell district, at the outlay, it is believed, of about £3000 ; but if you saw the place where they are building the school, you would, I have no doubt, be as much surprised as I was on examining it. They have actually cut out a hole in the c!ay hill, and are sticking the building in that hole. The floor of the building being placed so near the ground, there can be no due ventilation ; and, as no proper provision can be made for the efficient drainage of surface water, the floor must always be cold and damp. The east end of the building nearly abuts upon a sloping clay bank, which will prevent light and air getting to the building. I beg of you to go and look at what I have referred to, and judge for yourself, and I beg of the members of the Education Board also to go and look at it. As it stands at present, the building will be unwholesome and have a mean appearance, and reflect but little credit upon those concerned in its erection. It is such blunders that will destroy the education system.—l am, &c., Resident.
