COUNTRY NEWS.
TAUEAXGA VALLEY, NEAR WAIROA. A few weeks ago I told you about the formation of a class for the improvement of young men in this district. I am glad that it is completed. On Friday last everything was arranged. A<r. T. Adamson, a respected neighbour, was elected president. We have fifteen members on the books, and we pay 3d per week. In regard to preaching services, Mr. Kingsley, a Uy-reader of the Church of England, camc here from Auckland last Sunday to conduct service. We are sorry we are about to lose the assistance of one of our best friends, Mr. Keer, of or near Drury. The above gentleman, with his own horse, has ridden over forty miles in the day to teach and preach here on Sunday. We have friends who come from Auckland nearly every week to preach.—[A Ccr. respondent, December 9.] TAIRUA. He was carried by his comrades to Cleaver's liotel, and thence brought down by boat to the mill, where he arrived just in timo to be placed on board one of the vessels leaving for Auckland. On the following Saturday, November 29, a young man named T. Kelly was brought down from the bush by his comrades, suffering from a cut on the foot. He, with three more young men, had only just commenced a sub-contract from Messrs. Iloss and Martils, when he met with this accident. Three of his toes were nearly off. A subscription, amounting to £'23 10s, was raised for him amongst kis fellow-workmen and the mill hands, and he was sent up to Auckland in one of the cutters.—[Own Correspondent, December S.]
