TRAP ACCIDENT IN QUEENSTREET.
Adoct half-past four yesterday afternoon a seri.us accident occurred in the lower part of Qaeen-strect, directly opposite Fortstreet. The accident is mainly attributed to thit habit of reokliss or rapid driving which ia too common in our crowded thorouohfares ; and, although the accident, we regret to say, is likely to prove of a very serious nature to one person, yet abundant testimony was adduced on the spot to show that no blame could be attached to the person driving the spring-cart with which the bu2gy came into collsion. Mr. James Smith, "livery-stable keeper, and Mr. A. Murray, of Napier, were coming up Queenstreet in a buggy, drawn by Connaught Ranker, at a good speed, and when abreast of Fort street encountered two carts, one going uy and the other down, and in attempting to 'pass through them, came in contact ■with the one s, jing down, or on the west side. The effect of the collision was so smart as to pitch Mr. Smith from the front eeat, and to throw him against the wheel of the other cart, the wheel, unfortunately, scalping him. Mr. Murray was aho thrown out from the back against the wheel, and got his right leg through the spokes, but, fortunately" the cart was drawn up sharp, and he escaped with a few bruises and a shaking. Mr. Smith was picked up, bleeding profuHoly from the crown of the head, and taken into a druggist's shop, but the serious character of the wound was apparent, and he was at once removed to the hospital. Accounts therefrom at a late hour la=t night were to the effect that the scalp of his head was almost clean gone, but, so far a3 could ba ascertain-.d, the skull was no; fractured. The buggy and horse escaped without much dama-e, one shaft only being broken.
