The examination for scholarships wi'l be held at Auckland and the Thames, on the 17th instant. The Taranaki lierahl has the following :— . serious case of illness has been occasioned by the bite of a venomous spider known as the katipo. A person was sitting in the vicinity of the sandhills on SaturJ.-iy last, when he was bitten by a spider on tho ankle. Ho shortly afterwards sull'ered intense pain, which continued without abatement for several days. He was taken to the Hospital, and, while there, his suffering was so great as to cause delirium, and his body began to swell. The case required the utmost cara and attention before any favourable symptoms were produced. We are ghd to say that the patient is now out of danger, and progressing towards recovery,"
