THAMES SCHOOL EXAMINATION'S.

Christmas is rapidly approaching, ami with it the season for school examinations. O i Tuesday last the annual examinations of the schools conducted by the Sisters of Mercy in the school-room, in connection with S\ Joseph's Church, Willoughby-street, Shortland, were commenced. The proceedings were presided over by Eev. Father O'Eeilly, and there were present: Eev. Father Golden (of Waikato), the Eev. Mother of the Auckland convent, five Sisters of Mercy, and a large number of parents and friends nf tho children. The examinations commenced with the infant school. The proceedings were opsned by the singing of a hymn and a short address from the chairman. The classes then stood up, and the children themselves put the questions to one another, the answers being given very readily. Interspersed with the lessons a number of songs and recitations were very nicely rendered, some of the recitations being really well given. The examination for tho purpose of awarding the prizes had taken place previous to the public examination. The following is tha prize list :—

First Class: Carrie Pierce, good conduct; Mary 'Whalen, study; Edmund Twohill, reading and spelling; George Moore, general improvement and recitation; Margaret Tooher, study; Eliza Pierce, general study; Anne Dunne, general improvement; Mary Douglas, genaral improvement. Second Class : Nellie Griffiths, writing ; James McA.uly, spelling and reading ; Mary Quadri, spelling ; Emily Mulligan, tables and reading; Albert Hanlan, writing ; Norah Dowan, general improvement; Alice Allen, spelling: Kate Mcllhone, reading and spelling; Ellen Tooher, spelling; Norah Scanlan, reading and spelling. St. Joseph's school was then examined. The examination of the pupils attending this school was something similar to the previous one, the various classes standing np and the children patting the questions to one ano'.her.

After the distribution of the prizes the chairman briefly addressed the audience. 7he Eev. Father Golden also addressed a few words to those present. The proceeding closed with singing the National Anthem. On Wednesday afternoon the public examination of the vonng ladies attending the Select School took place. This school i") also conducted by the Sisters of Mercy. The large school-room was crowded to excess, the audience evincing great interest in the proceedings. The Eev. Father O'Reilly presided. During tho proceedings several trios were given on two pianos and a harmonium, the effect being most pleasing. The singing of the young ladie3 was also really good, and was evidently thoroughly appreciated by tha audience. The programme concluded by short practices in calisthenics and deportment, Mr. Ba-low being the instructor. The prizes were then distributed to the winners, and three wreaths of honour for good-conduct wi re also given to—first class, Jliss Gibbons ; second class, Miss Mahoney; and, third class, Mies Eobertson. Fathers O'Eeilly and Golden addressed a few words to the audience, and the proceedings terminated with singing the National Anthem. The following is the prize list of the Select School:—
