THE DEMAND FOR EMPLOYMENT.
Tut following communication has been received from his Worship tho Mayor :— Mayor's office, Auckland, December 5, 1870. ij X promised the numbers of the deputation from the unemployed who waited upon me that I would make the necessary inquiries and communicate with the Government iu regard to the starting of the Newmarket works, I have to request that the following correspondence and statemeut be published for the information of those interested :— "To the Hon. the Minister of Public Works, Wellington.—Deputation of unemployed waited on me. Convinced there it a number out of work. \\ .iile inquiring as to channels for absorption, would urge Government desirability of proceeding with >1 > w market workshops. Kindly Stat 1 ; if we may calculate on their being bei-un soon. —Tiio.<. Peacock, Mayor." " Wellington, December 4, 1579. "ToThos. Peacock, Ksq., Mayor, Auckland.—New market ait i coutract will be entered into as soon as money voted.—lt. Olivek." 1 placed myself in communication with various chairmen of highway boards in the country districts around Auckland, a*id also •with contractors having works in progress 3t the present time. 1 have been aspired that in Ka;t TamaUi aud Mangare districts there will be employment in three weeks tim? 1 , for about 300 men to assist in the wheat crop, aud that taking the whole of the districts within molcrate range of Auckland, something like 500 men will be required tor two months' work. From the contractors I have received the following replies. Mr. Fallon, Oiaupo, States :—" In a few days can employ 20 good labourers " —Mr. lJauaher status : "My firm can employ 20 men now at Ki.incu cml, and will require 20 mere iu ab.mS a fortnight."
